What is this unknown tool?
This is a tool that was recently found in a locked cupboard in a house we have just bought. We have no idea what it is! Its quite heavily rusted with an iron shaft, Wooden Handle and another material wedged and nailed into the end. Its either stone or metal, we can’t agree, but its very thick and isn’t in any way rusting like the shaft.
The end of the tool is in a wedge shape. It doesn’t seem like something used in a fire as it is too short, but my housemates disagree and think it may be some sort of poker. It would be a very heavy poker, but it could be used in a forge, or on an anvil.

It seems to at least be a copper alloy! I’ve just taken it outside and rubbed it on the ground, and revealed a brass coloured metal. How would such a Soldering Iron be used?
I believe what you have there is a old style soldering iron. They used them for everything from soldering the connections of stained glass, to the electrical connections of the old “knob-and-Tube” wiring. {That’s where I come in this picture lol} The green tip is what caught my eye. Copper tip would heat up real fast and the way they did it out in the field is unique as well. I just cant remember right now how they did it. I will look it up after.
I’m looking for something that supports or denies the possibility of brass. This was used during a time of if it works to put food on my table then use it. I try to back up any claims or withdraw them. I have not seen positive or negative. I’m sure that if it was brass they would not be too far from their work when it got to temp. I’m thinking its more to the windows with stained glass in a collage style with led seems holding the glass together is the primary use. I’m still looking.

OK I found support that it is a soldering iron. ebay/antique soldering irons will get a dump load of them. As for the tip I can only see evedence that they used brass in what they called “tinning” the tips. But nothing concrete. I was thinking another use of the day was they used led fitting for plumbing and used them to solidify the connections. That would require a fast hot application the properties of brass would be more consistant with.
